There is my blog. The first three entries are describing my mission and what I intend to do with this game I’m designing. I’m still getting some of my research together to actually put in blog form (getting things from my head to my keyboard is never easy).
I thought this was a pretty cool read. Getting ideas to paper has to be one of the hardest things to do. Id like to see what you come out with next. Any ideas?
Right now, I’m going to be taking a look some websites that I believe could be helpful in designing my interface and what kind of services and programs to build into my social game.
My biggest current issue is figuring out specific game challenges, because like I said in my presentation, I don’t want to just tack achievements onto it and call it a day.

Final Projects: 1 year ago · ViewThis week was mostly a struggle with Unity for the Ar app we are working on. After much time and effort we found a fix to get the export from unity to play on the phone, however for some reason Unity causes the droid to get extremely hot and go into a reboot cycle (possibly an issue with the phone itself) The thing is when exporting from eclipse the ap seems to work much smoother and for quite a bit longer before the heating issue starts.

Final Projects: 1 year ago · ViewI think this is great. Publicly traded System of Education sounds like it could be the catch phrase of the next decade. I was wondering how you set up your system for a prototype. Since so much of the meat is in user generated content. Would this work like Wiki where collaborators post videos together [...]

Final Projects: 1 year ago · ViewI’ve put together sprites for our prototype and made some images for the design document. The basic layout and interface is done, now it’s about flushing out how the concept should work and making any images that might go along with that. We’ve talked about a metranome function and the possibility of recording tracks. Elements that won’t be in our prototype but would hopefuly be in the final smartphone product.

Final Projects: 1 year ago · ViewI know we’ve said this before but our group desperately wants people to playtest our game! Come to the 5th floor of the student center this Saturday at 1pm to play. Bring your friends too! The more the merrier! Also, try to wear a black shirt or a white shirt to the event. If you have one of each, bring both. Thanks!
Update! I met with Bill Schnirel this afternoon about using the student center with a larger number of people, and he said it won’t be possible this weekend since there are two events in the student center, one on the first and second floor, one on the fourth and fifth. I have another meeting tomorrow morning with someone else about getting a new space. Hopefully, we’ll have the entire north side of the Academic Center (floors 1-6) to play at the same scheduled time, but I’ll keep you all posted
You can also check the official website at http://selfloud.net/RoyalReckoning
see you on Saturday if i have some free time!

Final Projects: 1 year ago · ViewI’m starting to feel like I’m stalking Edward Dici, the psychologist talked about in the motivations chapter in cognitive surplus. It that or he is one of the major people studying the effects of motivation on behavior. I just hate when I look down on a list of papers and see the same author on a pile of them.
On a related note, I’ve ended up looking back at the work of Dr James Cutting. Who, ironically given his name, has looked at how the relationship of shot lengths to each other. He theorizes that by maintaining a specific relationship between neighboring shots (in time sequence) you may be able to better keep people attention. He has found a 1/f relationship between shot lengths. This same relationship describes all sorts of other aspects of human cognition, from divisions of sections of music to reaction times. I’m wondering if this frequency relationship may be usable to drive size and intensity of rewards in a game.

If you try to replicate a real world enviornment, you get none of the benifits of being a game or abstracted envrionment. Instead you need to look at how game mechanics can be [...]

Final Projects: 1 year ago · ViewExcellent point and thank you for the feedback. I agree completely that the seriousness could be dangerous. In the same vein, I've been thinking carefully about how far the game should teach and how many different things. The sheer number of "professions" and sub-professions in the real world must be streamlined into manageable groups for [...]
