I’ve been ruminating over the ideas presented in this recent Gamasutra post about achievements (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6360/the_cake_is_not_a_lie_how_to_.php) and how I can incorporate it into my ARG design. What do you guys think?

After reading CS about Deci’s Soma experiment, it got me thinking back to last week’s subject of Gamification and how it seems, according to his experiment, that this new fad may simply be gearing people towards a plummet of intrinsic motivation for things they used to do out of free will. Sure, there was a bit of discrepancy when it came to monotonous, boring tasks such as brushing one’s teeth. But what about things like taking public transportation? Give someone redeemable points for taking the bus and they do it, because they’re being rewarded. But, take way the motivational factor, and you may see an even further drop in public transportation commuters as before the rewards were even instituted.

Let’s say someone took to the bus a couple times a week because they thought it was good for the environment. Then, all of a sudden, it got even better because they got points for it that they could use for whatever. Now take those points away. Will that person simply go back to riding the bus because it’s good for the environment? Or will those points have only spoiled the person into dreading public transportation once the points are gone? I believe it would.

It’s the same thing I think about with our major. Why are we doing this major? Well, as much as you may say it’s for a different reason (and at this time, it very well may be), but we all got interesting i game design because we LOVE video games. We enjoyed playing them so much, making them must be all the better. And for now, it is. But what happens when we start to get paid for it? I don’t know, but according to Deci’s experiment, we’re going to despise it (maybe not to that extreme, but you get the picture).

    Well I hope not.

@labyrinth, I thought that the person would manually count the points not BGE actually giving you a score sheet.  In that case it would be cool

My apologies. I meant that the points you accumulate in the Safety Net are not related to the total points you accumulate during the game. The Safety Net points can be used however to deduct from the points lost when not washing dishes after dinner or when you used dishes to eat is over. [...]

@crazedghoul1704  my total was 190… 10% of 190 is 19. I assumed you added that to your total thus 190+19 = 209… sorry if I misunderstood your scoring plan.

Oops, I totally didn't see this topic when I posted my own idea (which was basically the same, haha).  I totally agree with this idea, I think it would really help people save money and protect the environment.  Two birds with one stone.  My only suggestion would be to make the "score" into something along [...]

I read over the article about ”Fuanasphere” and think it’s very inventive. I like the fact that it’s creators took an MMOG and made it into a casual game, since MMO’s are usually a ”hardcore” gamer genre. It also took the social aspects of MMO’s to a new level.

I talked about it in another post on this site, but many MMO’s can be very anti-social, ironically enough. There are only certain areas of the game that require players to be cooperative/social. Fuanasphere seems to develop reward system that create a high motivational factor to be social.

So points gained by reading are redemable of other task.  The last I looked, the dish washing game said you could exchange their points for not having to wash dishs.  We should trade in reading points for not having to wash dished.

True. Maybe if they do complete their washing dishes within a short period of time, there could be a multiplier attached to the point system. But I think to keep things simple, if a player completes washing all the dishes (and they are very clean) in 10 mins or less, add 25 bonus points to the [...]

I agree. Roommates should definitely moderate activity. I think players shouldn't gain any points for eating plateless meals. If they do eat those meals, that's fine, but eating snacks or food using your hands shouldn't be related to the game whatsoever in terms of points. To make the game simple, players should only gain points [...]

Whoops, @ crazedghoul1704 – My page didn't display your post before I posted mine, but I agree with you – and while I don't think it's ok to penalize people for being slow washing dishes, I do think it's ok to reward people who do it faster, as long as they still get clean (slight [...]

I tried playing the game over the last day with myself, but I realized there were some more things we might want to account for – For my first two meals of the day, I had this: 3 silverware: 3 points 2 large plates: 40 points 1 large glasses: 15 points 1 pot: 25 points [...]

That doesn't make much sense. Why would someone make a larger mess to get more points, they would just be making more work for themselves. But if they are trying to get more points and they make larger messes, I'm sure the roommates would catch on and discourage the behaviour. Obviously, making a larger mess [...]

Out of the house sounds good because if we make it go all the way to work than the game can become a day long thing.

Yeah I was thinking more along of the line of something like be to work on time. Or more accurately, be out of the house at a certain time, since obviously, there are factors like traffic or emergencies that could prevent a person from making it to work at the same time everyday.

I was just mentioning a buddy for so it would be doable in the scope of the assignment, but if you wanted to execute it yes an electronic system would be good that or an iPhone app or something.  I like your point system that sounds reasonable.

You can certainly think of both the ”low tech” and high tech version of the game–there’s a lot of technology already present in your scenario that you can build from, including, of course, the built in monitoring systems of the GPS.

I disagree i still think that even when washing dishes the person should loose points. Other wise peopel will just make extra large messes to clean more dishes. Not cost effective.
Although i do agree with the current point system. that has been established for washable items vs. points.

Reigun your right about the end goal.  I was kind of thinking about having it be you get to work and the game is done, or do you mean that you should have a prize after breakfast?

?¿ you have a good point where if it's your own money which is why it would be good if you gave your money to someone you trust to hold onto that lives with you, unless you have self-control, and they keep track of your morning game. My drinking version I recommend with friends and [...]
