What direction should games be taking? Think about it in all senses of the question and respond here – what would make the ultimate game?

What does everyone think about the games you used to play outside as kids? What was the allure of games like tag, hide and seek, and capture the flag? Over the course of creating Royal Reckoning, I thought a lot about how fun these games used to be and I have no idea why I [...]

I like the logic of having some games win over others because of how people react to them over time. When others figure out that things are going wrong with them, they tend to get them in trouble. Controversy goes everywhere and people can see that these things can hurt them over time.

Oh, they still have meaning…I just used a really roundabout way of saying that I don't judge games purely on their narrative or setting.  I'm more concerned with the internal consistency of the game's logic than the logic of its' story or tone.

Yes, it makes sense for some games to go in this type of direction depending on how people want them to be viewed by a balance of time.

To be honest i dont really remember what i ment at the time i wrote that but from what im looking at i think i was saying that i feel that the setting of a narrative should have some meaing to everyone. (Sometimes it doesnt but i feel that it should)

What do you mean when you say you find it disturbing?  My statement doesn't really put me in one camp or the other as far as this particular debate goes, but I'm not sure what makes it disturbing.  I enjoy Rez as much as Soul Blazer as much as Rise of Nations, all 3 of [...]

I think your right in your last statement and i will agree with it but i find it disturbing how "realism and setting of the narrative has almost no bearing by itself on whether or not I enjoy the game."

Not necessarily.  The realism and setting of the narrative has almost no bearing by itself on whether or not I enjoy the game.  What I don't like are games that go to great lengths to add complexity, and even attempt to connect the mechanics to the narrative (such as materia and its' role in FFVII) [...]

There is actually a reason for the MINECRAFt graphics. Since the world is "Ever generating". Having anyhting besides cubes would crash mose servers and player clients. So low end graphis are a very useful caviot for creating very large "mega games".  AND yes LUNA, i do agree that low end graphics can stylize a game. [...]

So, defendor, What your saying is that you want to have a 'relatable circumstance' (a common tactic in most books to the reader to be able to "understand the main character" a bit better on a personal lvl) in your videogames BUT with one fantastical idea that makes the entire experiance more thrilling. So you [...]

I much prefer fantasy games to reality, with one caveat: they have to contain a degree of realism.  By this, I mean that everything that can be done in the game should be explainable within the rules of the game and with parallels to the real world, and do not have special conditions surrounding them.  [...]

My choice would certainly be the more fantastical games, and I feel the same way about books.  I mean, realistic fiction like "Crime and Punishment" is nice and all, but I find much more joy when reading something like Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings."  In fact, Tolkien once wrote an essay in which he [...]

I tend to enjoy the fantastical games as well. If i wanted to be in the real world i wouldn't be playing video games or read books. On the other hand I think a game that incorporates fantastical elements into a realistic setting would be rather fun and entertaining.

I personally enjoy the more fantastical games: if I want a taste of reality I can always step outside. If a game is really well made, it should be immersive regardless of whether it's realistic or not.

In this matter I personally think that it depends on what you want to do. Realistic Games tend to be more immersive for the player so that they feel like they are in the game and has its own merits in that. Fantastical Games tend to draw upon the players imagination and curriousity to explore [...]

Should games be focusing more on Making games more Realistic like many first person shoots are dooing such are COD, making games more fantastical for the user as a form of escape from the mundane, or a form of competition with real life individuals?

Let me reverse the question for you a little then – do you think that “bad” graphics can be used to actually stylize a game? The thing that bothers me most about games with “bad” graphics is when they have low resolution. Minecraft may have a sort of 8-bit feel about it, but there are [...]

I honestly dont give two farts about graphics personally. Minecraft is a good example of how graphis are of little importance next to game play.
I understand the importance of graphics but dont think that every game needs the best graphics avaliable to be a good game

I used to not really care much about graphics – as long as the gameplay was fun and the story was good, I could care less about the graphics. However, now that there are some really beautiful games out there, even if it is not a primary motivation for getting a game, graphics is now [...]
